The Twins
Every person, no matter how mundane or lackluster, is special in their own way. Everyone has a unique set of DNA, fingerprints, and life experiences that can never be replicated.
But like with biological twins, patterns and similarities — even to the point of synchronistic — can be found between those with the same astrological placement. So while every Gemini is not perfectly alike any other Gemini, there are always shared traits between them, like any sign. Unlike every other sign, however, Gemini is a master at copying traits/mannerisms/dialects from other signs as well, which I discuss in more detail in the latter two archetypes.
With a pair of twins as the constellation and primary symbol of Gemini, there is already a complexity to those with prominent Gemini placements since you have more to work with energetically. This abundance of energy is the nature of Air signs in general since there is freedom of open space. All other elements are reliant on substance of some kind, but Air is all around and hardly dependent on other elements in order to function. In this way, Geminis are naturally independent.
Still, there is an ease to which Geminis will follow the lead of other signs, especially Fire signs. Geminis easily full the fires of these signs, providing for an inspiring, often creative relationship. Anyone that can provide good ideas or teach them something academic or just for fun is a go-to buddy to a Gemini. While Geminis thrive well in friend groups of nearly any size, they are also fine keeping themselves company in times of stress or a much-needed social break. Even then, they will likely keep their minds busy with plenty of activities so that nary a dull moment should pass.
In season with their independence, something often touted in the astrology community is the non-committal nature of Gemini. This belief stems from the indecisive or flighty pattern seen in many Gemini Suns/Venuses when it comes to romantic or committed relationships. There is some truth to this, but the Ascendant sign must be factored in to determine the placement of the houses within a natal chart, thus determining the likeliness of loyal, committed behavior toward close relationships. The 2nd and 7th houses, traditionally ruled by the Venus-ruled planets Taurus and Libra, concern values and interpersonal relationships, so these are good houses to start with.
For example, if a Gemini Sun and/or Venus has an Aquarius Ascendant/Rising, their 2nd house is in Pisces, which is a very loyal, generous sign, and the 7th house is in Leo, which is also a very loyal and affectionate sign, so this person would prefer close, long-term relationships to one person, preferably a soulmate type or happy “other” over casual dating. Having advantageous Rising signs and simply being interesting and spontaneous on occasion will eliminate any worries about their ability to stay committed.
Just as some Geminis struggle with commitment, some — and often the very same — struggle with consistency. This doesn’t mean they are going to always switch-up on you 180° or have horrible mood swings; most Geminis I know are very neutral a majority of the time. Rather, they might start a project and then abandon it halfway or near its finish; they might become hyper-fixated on something that they lose steam over shortly after; or they might start off achieving success in school or at work consistently only to barely get through the day due to major burnout. Geminis tend to be very smart and very hard-working, but they don’t always know when to quit going until it all comes crashing to a halt. For the same reasons it can be difficult to rely on a Gemini, but as it is in their nature to be mutable and changing like the winds, they shouldn’t be shamed for their shortcomings, especially when their successes can be so great.
In the previous pieces on the Zodiac, I mentioned how age can correlate with the order of the signs. Since we are in the first three signs, we are still within a kiddish stage just before and right at adolescence, so they’re the smart kids in school that get through their homework really fast and might let you look off their homework before its due if you’re good enough friends. This kid is good in every class — a true jack of all trades — but still somehow has a ton of anxiety over what’s out of their control. Wisdom that dispels such anxiety does not come until we enter Sagittarius, Gemini’s opposite or sister sign, where mastery of academics and trades can be achieved. At Gemini's level, we are still just getting started.
The Gemini Archetypes
Of the 12 zodiac signs, Gemini might be the hardest to select archetypes for. There are several communication-heavy roles that Geminis gravitate toward, so I lumped them all together, leaving me a little without certainty where to go from there. This is the nature of the first mutable sign — it is more open to change and flexibility than the signs before it, but there isn’t anything all too defining about a Gemini themselves; more often than not, it is what a Gemini says or makes that defines them rather than the similar personality quirks they have to other Geminis. After some deliberation, I settled on three archetypes: The Communicator Archetype, The Shapeshifter Archetype, and The Mirror Archetype. I will discuss some celebrity charts within these sections, focusing mainly on those with Gemini within their Big 3 (Sun, Moon, and Ascendant/Rising).
**Please skip ahead to the next section on The Communicator Archetype if you are already familiar with what the Big 3 represents and what aspects in a natal chart indicate**
To recap the importance of one’s astrological Big 3, the sun indicates the ego, the moon indicates emotions, and the ascendant indicates appearance and immediate impressions of personality.
The sun sign is determined by where the sun is located at the time of birth, moving from one zodiac constellation to the next every thirty days from our earthly perspective.
The moon sign is determined by where the moon is located at the time of birth, moving from one zodiac constellation to the next every 2 1/2 days.
Finally, the ascendant sign is determined by the what sign the eastern horizon is located at the time of birth, moving from one zodiac constellation to the next every 2 hours or so. The ascendant sign also determines the 12 houses of a chart, always starting with the 1st house corresponding with the sign of the ascendant.
There are multiple house systems, such as Porphyry, Placidus, and Whole House, that differ on how place of the the angles and size of the houses are determined, but for the sake of simplicity, I will use the Whole House system in my chart analyses, meaning all 12 houses are of equal size, 30 degrees, starting at 0 degrees each. An entire natal chart is 360° and has several planetary and asteroid placements, all of which can interact with each other in what are called aspects. The major aspects I cover are conjunction (0°), trine (30° & 120°), square (90°), and opposition (180°). Conjunctions and trines are positive aspects that indicate harmonious blending of energies while squares and oppositions are negative aspects that indicate clashing, tense resistance of energies. Aspects can exist within a natal chart and within synastry, which is the comparing of two natal charts to analyze the relationship between two people.
With that said, let’s talk about the garrulous Gemini: the Communicator.
The Communicator Archetype
If you want someone to talk your ear off, get yourself a Gemini.
Admittedly, I was half-tempted to call this archetype “The Schmoozer” since most of Gemini’s communication is at the level of a used car salesman or customer service representative. Geminis are able to check the vibe of just about anyone and communicate according to that pretty instantaneously. They are the best at getting people to move along to the next point, whether that be to purchase something or to guide someone through a series of assignments/tests, such as a grade school teacher. This is due to a couple main things:
As a Mercury-ruled sign, communication is key. Between Gemini and Virgo, Mercury can express itself in his role as the gods’ postman through quick, often short-term messages (Gemini) or through highly detailed, meticulous plans (Virgo). Beyond communication, Mercury is the Roman God of finance, travelers, luck, trickery, thievery, & merchants. Connecting the God to the astrology of Mercury the planet or the 3rd house, ruled by Gemini, short-distance travel and trickery overlap. If the trickery isn’t of a deceptive or shapeshifting nature (he is a psychopomp, or portal between the land of mortals and the underworld), then he’s probably messing with your car or internet connection when in retrograde.
As an early sign of the Zodiac, moving things along is the name of the game. Aries was the excited kick-starter, Taurus was the patient stabilizer, and now Gemini comes in with curious intelligence to communicate the lessons learned from their predecessors. However, it is important to note that Gemini is not simply Aries and Taurus split in two — they are their own unique energy like every sign. In a way, passing through each sign is similar to graduating from that sign’s lessons and moving forward to the next level. Gemini is the first sign to focus on the learning process, as Aries and Taurus are about sowing through action and creation. The cerebral component of this school of life begins in Gemini, the first teacher of the zodiac.
I just as easily could have named this section “The Teacher Archetype,” but like “The Schmoozer,” the key theme is communication, so all fit under the double-stuffed Gemini umbrella. And different from Taurus’ “The Vocalist” archetype, Gemini’s communication style is almost purely academic/informational, so they are less likely to have the big, soulful voice of Taurus and more likely to speak with quick, pointed purpose. Later in this section, I go over the music genres most commonly dominated by Geminis because of their articulate vocal style, the most prominent examples being rap and hip-Hop.
All air signs are known for communication in some way due to the function of air as an element in speech. While we communicate through many mediums that don’t require speaking, humans are ultimately social creatures who like to tell stories and listen to stories be told, so the quickest way of doing so is through the spoken word. Libra communicates with charming appeal, most frequently vocalizing concerns over matters of law and order. Aquarius communicates with mass appeal, most often being the air energy behind social media movements and collective groups like protests. Yet, it seems like Gemini are biggest talkers because they don’t really need a reason to speak up — they just do!
As someone who loves Geminis and attracts so many into my close circle of friends, I have seen their habits and it is very humorous how little they catch on to how much they talk. Champion of chain texting, frequent flyer of gossip columns and websites, and ghost whisperer of their own stream of consciousness, Gemini is always preoccupying their busy brains with more, more, more, leaving very room for quiet time. Traditional meditation might leave Gemini easily frustrated, especially those with ADD/ADHD but practicing presence through thought-provoking exercises might begin to eventually settle the mind to a stable, focused space. My recommendations are to start with gratitude journaling, music therapy, and 10-15 minute breathing exercises if you struggle with meditation.
So what causes them to talk, and talk, and talk? Is it just Mercury liking the sound of his own voice? And what about the introverted Geminis?
Okay, first let’s look at the houses.
Gemini rules the third house of communication, early learning, thinking, writing, local environment, and chosen mindset. Since each zodiac sign represent how energy manifests, each house represents where energy manifests, so if there are significant placements in the third house, then each of these areas within the third house will be strong and/or relevant to each planetary placement, which shows what energy manifests.
For instance, my third house Capricorn stellium includes my Moon, Neptune, and Uranus, so I have an emotional connection to writing and teaching (Moon), I have a vivid imagination and aspirations in writing as a career (Capricorn Neptune), and much of my writing process includes short bursts of drafting and the writing itself includes themes of collectivity and revolutions (Uranus).
Strong third house placements or a strong Gemini house placement, such as the fifth house of self-expression and performance, can lend to a very talkative and quick-witted person. If you have a weak Gemini house placement like me with Gemini in the eighth house then you might have a deep connection to Geminis but you personally don’t like to over-explain yourself or talk for the sake of it. Despite my strong third house placement, the overall structure of your house placements paint the picture of one’s communication style, so — true to my natal chart as a whole — I am best at communicating through writing or pre-planned lectures/performances as a teacher or actor, which is also amplified by my 10th house Leo Mercury. With this placement in particular, most jobs and career paths that interest me or provide me space to demonstrate my talents involve frequent communication through verbal and written mediums.
Geminis are inherently extroverted introverts. While all the placements explained above vary the degrees of this, ultimately while Geminis love to talk and are very talented at it, they can overthink themselves into exhaustion, so these social butterflies like to stay cocooned when given the choice. In their off time, they still find speak frequently, but prefer to do so alone or with those who don’t drain them. After all, as a twin, it helps to have an “other” nearby to reverberate off of, so it’s not like the thoughts or conversations ever lose wind with Gemini if they are in a comfortable setting with the right person. It’s advised that if you’re a Gemini who tends to isolate themselves, get a roommate/housemate if all else fails.
Public-facing Geminis are more or less forced to expend their energy to their audience in order to deliver all sides to them. These Geminis will likely be the schmoozers of “The Communicator” archetype, wrapped up in their own ability to turn a phrase and win over anybody through the right salespitch. They tend to be the some of the most worrisome of Geminis purely because there is something they are trying to sell but they aren’t always forthcoming as to what it is they get from it in return. Sometimes it is as simple as “I want more money / more power so I will say whatever to get them to buy my product / bullshit,” sometimes it is noble such as publishing art to provide something meaningful and connecting to their audience, and sometimes it is sinister where they will manipulate you to control you or flow of information regarding them or something that gives them advantage over you. While not all late-degree Geminis are like this, I tend to find they, especially politicians, tend to be the most manipulative and abusive in this way.
First, let’s look closer into the better part of “The Communicator” archetype where Gemini’s talent for articulation and garrulousness serve them well in music, particularly the genres of rap and hip-hop.
“Your horoscope is a Gemini, two sides/So you better cop everything two times” - Kendrick Lamar, “Wesley’s Theory” (2015).
The final section of my Taurus piece touched on the common thread of Taurus placements and musical talent in the blues, soul, R&B, and funk, among others. Similarly, an overwhelming amount of rap and hip-hop artists have Gemini placements, most often Sun and Mercury. So...nearly every big-name rapper...
There are several factors as to why Geminis make such excellent, natural rap artists. Considering their rulership of the arms, hands, and lungs, there is emphasis on consistent writing and a large lung capacity. These advantages lend toward extensive lyric writing that includes multiple meanings and double entendres, as well as music allusions and cultural references. As Kendrick Lamar told Vanity Fair in 2018,
“‘Execution’ is my favorite word. I spend 80 percent of my time thinking about how I’m going to execute, and that might be a whole year of constantly jotting down ideas, figuring out how I’m going to convey these words to a person to connect to it. What is this word that means this, how did it get here and why did it go there and how can I bring it back there? Then, the lyrics are easy.”
Geminis prove the point that if you put your mind to something, you can do anything. The ideas are there, you just have to explore the endless thoughts to get to them. Kendrick went five years in between studio albums with Damn (2017) and Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers (2022), yet he will also release several diss tracks on Drake within a week; however, it is important to note how more time was necessary between albums simply due to his reflections on generational trauma, infidelity, fatherhood, and fame, all of which cannot be addressed with such feverish immediacy as tearing down another rapper.
Speaking, a crucial Gemini-Gemini dynamic came to light when Tupac Shakur and Christopher “Biggie Smalls” Wallace began what might be considered the most notorious rap feud in music history about a year after forming a close bond during the filming of Poetic Justice in 1993. Despite free-styling together at Madison Square Garden and Tupac becoming a mentor to Biggie, while Tupac was imprisoned for a year and a half he heard a rumor that Biggie was aware of the attack on Tupac in advance that occurred at Quad Recording Studios since that was Biggie’s hometown. Both Biggie and his manager P-Diddy denied these rumors, but once Tupac was released on $1.4 million bail in October 1995, he signed with Death Row Records, the west coast competitor to east coast’s Bad Boy Records, further distancing himself from Biggie and P-Diddy.
Tupac releases the diss track “Hit ‘Em Up” on June 4, 1996 (Gemini season) in which he attacks Biggie’s weight and loyalty to his wife and partnership with Bad Boy Records, while also commenting on the attack at Quad, stating, “Who shot me, but ya punks didn't finish / Now ya 'bout to feel the wrath of a menace.” Although Biggie wrote the song alluded in these lyrics “Who shot ya?” before the attack on Tupac, the rumors were partly fueled by the coincidental nature of Biggie’s lyrics to the real-life ambush on his former friend. Only three months after Tupac’s diss track was released, Shakur was shot four times in a Las Vegas drive-by and succumbed to his injuries six days later. He was only 25-years-old.
Six months later, on March 9, 1997, Biggie Smalls was shot in a Los Angeles drive-by the day after he filmed the music video for his single “Hypnotize.” He passed away within the hour at yet another tragically young age of 24. To this day, neither case has been solved.
When we look at the synastry (comparing and overlapping of natal charts) of Shakur and Wallace, we can see some huge indicators as to why their relationship turned from good to bad to ugly:
Looking at Saturn first, we have Tupac’s Saturn at 29° Taurus conjunct Biggie’s 0° Gemini Sun. This conjunction means there is only 1 degree that separates these two placements, meaning that Biggie’s ego (Sun) is constantly being challenged by Tupac’s karmic debtor (Saturn). Anytime two people’s planets share the same space, there is an opportunity for a shared understanding, but Saturn is one of those harsh planets that forces discomfort and conflict onto the owner and anything it touches. Saturn on someone’s Sun, their ego, is prime for a love-hate relationship that turns into an all-out rivalry, especially an ego-filled industry as the early 90’s rap and hip-hop scene.
Then, since the two are less than a year apart, Biggie’s Saturn at 8° Gemini is conjunct Tupac’s 5° Venus, which further confirms that mutual challenge these two face with one another. Rather than challenging his ego, Biggie challenges Tupac’s desires and relationships. Since Tupac was the first to feel suspicious about Biggie’s part in the attack at Quad while behind bars, it is similar to how a jealous lover becomes paranoid over their partner’s infidelity while separated. Tupac might have felt like Biggie compromised their friendship in order to keep out competition or maybe as a slight since Tupac denied Biggie’s offer to become his manager, opting for Biggie to stay with P-Diddy for a more guaranteed success. Whatever the reason, these Saturn aspects are brutally telling as two how these two could not seem to move past their distrust and antagonism toward one another.Let’s look at Pluto next. Both rappers have an interesting relationship with Pluto and their Moons with Tupac’s loose opposition (180° degrees) of his early degree Aries Moon (birth time unknown so the degree is estimated at 2°) and 27° Virgo Pluto, while Biggie has a loose conjunction between his Virgo Moon (17° - 24°) and 29° Virgo Pluto. Pluto can be a huge indicator of major transformation through death or themes of death, so the fact that Biggie’s Pluto is even closer in opposition toward Tupac’s Moon makes perfect sense as to why Tupac felt like the attack at Quad was so deeply personal. Tupac likely knew this feeling before having his own Pluto-Moon opposition natally, but then having a near-death experience on Biggie’s turf felt all too much like a betrayal. Plus, Tupac’s Lilith is at 1° Libra, so not only does he become more independent, rebellious, and outspoken as he becomes emotionally compromised, but Biggie’s Pluto is separate by only 2°, meaning that this run-in with death more or less had to be blamed on Biggie, regardless of Biggie’s actual involvement. A Lilith-Pluto conjunction is a strong indicator of an intense relationship that neither party is able to forget or “get over” easily.
Finally, both of their late degree Virgo Plutos trine (120° degree) Tupac’s 29° Taurus Saturn and Biggie’s 0° Gemini Sun, further establishing their transformation through their rivalry.
While some theories could be derived from analyzing the transit charts of both rappers’ death days, I feel like that would be straying from the point. I don’t view astrology as a way of uncovering the mysteries of the world. Rather, I find astrology is best used as a tool to understanding ourselves in the confirmative — what we already know but need validation or reminding of.
Tupac and Biggie’s synastry demonstrate how similar they are to one another — not just as Gemini men, but as men born less than a year from one another. They could have been in the same grade together, on the same team — and in a way they were. I see so many charts of childhood friends that look like theirs because their will be overlap with people born so close together. Ultimately, we meet many people who can challenge and transform us through shared trauma or similar upbringings that don’t become our rivals. Here, we have to understand the staging of their relationship: how much of it is actually true? How much of it was part of the show and how much of it was sincere beef? The stars can’t quite tell us, but they can show how both of them might have been moved to believe the other was not in their best interest. Ironically, this cautionary tale of two rapid communicators comes down to the efficiency of communication. We may never know how much or how little was said about the ambush on Tupac at Quad Recording Studios between Tupac and Biggie in private, but what was said in their diss tracks and among the public — even to this day — does very little to show us the sincerity of the matter.
Two Geminis enter the stage near the exact time, shine so bright, both exuding so much promise with every new single and studio album, and just as soon as they arrived, they were taken away. Regardless of if they were taken out by each other’s sides, their lives and their families’ lives were destroyed before anything could be resolved. While the feud is still current, I feel pretty confident I understand who has won Kendrick and Drake’s dispute, and I am pretty sure they know too. I wish I could say the same for two of the greatest rappers of the 1990’s.
However, THE greatest rapper of the 1990’s would go to Ms. Lauryn Hill. She has a 4° (Cancer degree) Gemini Sun and 23° Gemini (Aquarius degree) Mercury, meaning the focus and central message of her music tends to lean toward emotional, tender-hearted material such as her family in “To Zion,” which she performs in a unique, often experimental way. Her music and lyric style is magnetic and rich with multi-layered vocal accompaniments, often featuring a full band on “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” This studio album was her one and only as a solo artist, but it also earned her several accolades such as five Grammy Awards including Best New Artist and Album of the Year. Overall, she is the most decorated female rapper with eight Grammy Awards.
When it comes to quantity, once she is rolling, she doesn’t stop. Throughout her live album “MTV Unplugged No. 2.0,” she includes several interludes where she speaks directly to the audience. The longest interlude, Interlude 5, starts the second disk and features over twelve minutes of conversation that serves as an introduction to her as a person, wanting to be seen as whole. In the snippet below, some of the most commanding lines to me involve how she discovered power in personal passion and the unapologetic expression of self.
Lauren Hill - Interlude 5 Live
And in that respect, we all get to do what our passion is
See that's what praisin' God is all about, is doing your passion
You know, it's not useless, worthless ritual, you know, monotonous ritual
Where we just show up and can't wait to see the game, you know It's doing your passion and fulfilling your passion, you know That's how we're thankful That's how we say we appreciate the opportunity to be aliveAnd I'm just glad that I, you know, I don't have to slave anymore
You know, 'cause I, music was my love
And because of everything I thought had to accompany my music it became my burden
It just got stolen from me, I said,
What is this? How did this thing that I love so much so easily and so quickly turn to something I loath and hate?
And so now, you know, I understand that it was because I was measuring myself
Or trying to compare myself to a standard that wasn't reality
It wasn't the standard at all, you know
There's a scripture in the Bible that we, what does it say
It says 'We compare ourselves amongst ourselves' you know
That's not the standard, you already are the standard
What are you trying to fit into a standard for?
We were each created to be individual standards, you know
And we're tryna fit into a standard?
It doesn't make any sense, you knowSo now I'm just, you know, after all that, I'm just ready to be me
And it's a lot to work through, you know
Because all of us have hidden in these little boxes purposely Because of parts of ourselves that we were unhappy about
And it's because we didn't understand, you know
Because there's all this social doctrine that says, you know That the infinite God, with all this expression, who created every single one of us
Absolutely different, on purpose, wants everybody to fit into the same suit
But like, you know, that's deception, that's deceptionOk, let me just, I think this is the wrong one
I don't think this is the right one
We took, we were in, um, Florida this weekend
And we took the kids to Disneyworld, and um
You know we were going, they gave us a tour
So they escorted us through the back
And when they escorted us through the back
We got to see how, you know, there all these people workin' all hard
And it was like, real dirty back there, and of course, in the front it was all immaculately clean
And I said, I said, you know People need to see the reality, they need to seeYou know, how these people slave to maintain this illusion
And it felt like my life, I said,
’If people only knew what it was.’ It's like, you know
A bunch of musicians, listen, bustin' their 'mm' workin' all hard to make it look easy
What's the point?
You know, Oh, uh, I just threw this together, uh
You know, it's like, you know what I'm sayin'? I mean, you knowSlaving, slaving to act like, you know, I wake up like this
And none of us do, you know, none of us do, none of us do
And reality is good 'cause that means everybody could just exhale
Let your belly out, you know, and chill, you know
But people get mad at me when I say, Look, let's stop frontin' And I'm saying, you know, that's the blessing
Now we can go around and look at each other and say, Oh, you got one too?!And be free
And we want to defend the curse, I'll tell ya, that was not fun
Did it for a long time, too long
You didn't find it? It's another white one
But you see in my purse or the, the other bag? Or the green one? Ghetto, you know, it's reality, ok? Are they ready?
Oh let's see One time, it came to me, you know, I was just told very concretelyYou know, it was like that voice, the right one, said to me
He said, Lauryn, you know the real you is more interesting than the fake somebody elseI just want you to know that
Because we always thought we could get, you know
We could get reality by just putting on the clothes and wearin' the face and you know Lookin' hard in the video, but, you know Reality is it's like I've always told to my husband, it's like, look, you knowWe look at Bob Marley, you know, and we say
Ok, let's just grow locks and wear the clothes and have the band And we have no many idea how many years
Of struggle and pain and suffering that made that content
You see what I'm saying? You can't get it from the outside in Truth is from the inside out, you know.
When we look at Ms. Hill’s chart, there is a noticeable X of oppositions, one in particular being her 23° Gemini Mercury opposing her 22° Sagittarius Moon. I find that this opposition is present in these lyrics, particularly the wisdom she shares over freeing yourself from derivative mirroring and the standards of others. It can be difficult for her to express this wisdom, sourced from her Sagittarius Moon, because of this opposition since she already began to step away from fame by the filming of this live album in July 2001 while she was pregnant with her third child. It took many years in the industry and time away from the spotlight to begin touching on these matters so fully, but the song itself is a testimony on how all aspects can be overcome in time — and if not overcome, then at least unburdened by.
While Hill has yet to make an official comeback as a solo rap artist save for her appearance at Coachella in 2024, her contributions to music have stood the test of time, and whether she releases new music with The Fugees, through a collab, or as a solo credit, fans new and old will listen to what Ms. Lauryn Hill has to say next.
A Two-party System
Maybe it is because I had the quintessential Hamilton phase back in 2016 along with every other theatre kid, but there is something to having major politicians sing rap and hip-hop lyrics because much of the same benefits that Gemini aids rap artists also helps politicians appeal to the governing body.
Take for instance John F. Kennedy and his most famous quotes. "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country” is an example of a chiasmus. According to Grammar.com, a chiasmus is a literary device that dates back to ancient Greek verse and Hebrew scripture that contains a two-part sentence with the second part being the reversal of the first. Furthermore,
“...chiasmus is a mirroring of related concepts by repeating elements of a sentence in order to emphasize meaning in a particular pair of phrases - thus there must be an element of symmetry despite the phrases potentially being contrasting . This mirrored structure resembles an 'X,' when diagrammed, and 'chi' is the Greek letter, x. Chiasm, translated in Latin from Greek, means crossing or diagonal arrangement.”
I find it interesting how they mention the “mirroring” quality of a chiasmus due to Gemini’s role as a mirror. Similar to a chiasmus, an antimetabole is another literary device he utilized as an appeal to his audience. There is usually two-parts as well where the second part is the reversal of the exact same wording as the first part. For example, JFK said, “Mankind must put an end to war – or war will put an end to mankind,” which is incredibly similar to the previous device but I find this has more of an emphasis and finality to it rather than responding to the previous part.
JFK was a quotable guy and was not only likely to be well-liked as the youngest president in U.S. history, but he was incredibly well-liked. It wasn’t just the way he spoke or who was saying it, but what was being said. The context of his speeches read like lyrics to me, and like lyrics, words can volley or repeat to emphasize something in particular. It’s articulate, which is always admirable in a nation’s leader, and it resonates.
The next U.S. president might have iconic quotes of their own, but his version of articulation and resonance differs greatly in the execution and rhetoric of his speeches.
Donald Trump is particularly talented at rallying people up with short catchy phrases, tearing down his political opponents through name-calling — not to mention disparaging marginalized groups — and boasting about himself and the plans he’s made to make America great again per the schtick. What he’s not talented in is giving long speeches or fully answering a question without totally diverting the question or making things up. As it is pretty clear by now, there isn’t any quote of his in particular that I could pick that would compare to JFK’s poetic speech or that could enlighten us on what needs knowing or what needs being done about because it’s all over-exaggerated word salad at this point. He says a lot without much regard for the facts or the well-being of others, so he falls under the more sinister, evil car salesman Gemini, which is not too unlike his former bestie Elon Musk although he is a Cancer Sun (like his idol Hitler). In interviews, Trump tends to either answer part of a question, mention a somewhat similar idea but avoids the question, or simply avoids the question altogether and, again, ends up speaking mainly in word salad. But, ultimately, there are those who wait to make an excellent meal out of a phrase or two every week, so they keep coming back for more, so they keep giving him the mic and the Iron Throne.
It is not uncommon for a Gemini to say a lot without really saying anything important since some prefer the art of conversation or speech without it meaning anything in particular, but coherence and purpose is necessary from a leader. Like I’ve mentioned before, Geminis tend to be a jack of all trades, which suits the president considering all the capitalistic ventures he’s pursued such as Trump Steaks, Trump Vodka, Trump University, Trump Shuttle Inc., and a series of hotels and casino resorts, all of which eventually discontinued, bankrupted, or ceased operations, so you don’t have to necessarily be all that good at a particular trade as long as you stick to certain methods that win people over. He’s mainly about striking a deal, which can happen after talking someone up, imposing a particular narrative or perspective that he is in the right and cannot lose. It’s a form of magical thinking that he learned from his father that has kept him around for so long. It works, and it’s not exclusive to Geminis by any means, but being an Air sign who also happens to be a Gemini is especially crucial to getting his will across many circles where deals are made and people are conned.
One of the more interesting aspects to Geminis is the vast difference between them. Comparing JFK to Donald Trump is about as different as it gets, but both are U.S. Presidents and accomplished communicators. There are many ways in which one’s upbringing and personal values contribute to what they speak on and how they speak about it, so simply being from affluent backgrounds and sharing a Sun placement isn’t enough to call them alike. And often times we will see an alignment between their manner and subject of speech to the other placements that determine communication such as the 3rd house, Gemini house placement, and Mercury placement.
If there is a huge difference between two Geminis with similar positions of power, then the next archetype proves that even one Gemini can differ from their many forms as we discuss how Geminis make the perfect shapeshifters.
The Shapeshifter Archetype
Before we get into all the shapeshifting business, I’d like to preface this section with a bit of inspiration behind this archetype. Bear with me:
Like the previous archetype, I had contemplated many different versions of communicators, and this archetype is no exception. After “The Shapeshifter,” the secondary title to this section is “The Storyteller” because of the typical purpose behind shapeshifting: to tell stories! When I think of storytelling, I often go as far back as the oral tradition that dominated most of early indigenous peoples’ languages; their storytellers had a sacred role to fulfill as a guide and moral maypole on how to move about the world, and one such archetype they would explore as a cautionary tale to children would be “The Trickster” archetype. Shapeshifting coyotes, foxes, and other sneaky animals fulfilled this archetype, and most often the shapeshifting trickster had to learn how to help the community or get gone if he was going to continue joking around, which the more mischievous little ones ought to remember.
Storytelling provided a safe container for the storyteller to “shapeshift” like these trickster characters without actually causing harm, similar to how actors or reading teachers maintain innocence despite reciting some pretty deplorable material at times. And not only would the storyteller “become” these archetypes and characters through performance, but there were also moments of pure creativity since the storyteller could change or add details to shared stories to make them their own since they were often passed down through the generations. I find that while the oral tradition may not look quite the same today outside of indigenous communities, Geminis are some of the more capable and natural storytellers through conversation, gossip, music, acting, and public speeches; it is within the acting sphere in particular that I am interested in as it is the easiest field where the person can become lost in their character and completely transform into another person — hence, Gemini is “The Shapeshifter.”
Gemini hosts some of the most well-liked actors and actresses, such as Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, John Wayne, John Goodman, Christopher Lee, Chris Evans, Michael J. Fox, Cillian Murphy, Ian McKellan, Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman, and Angelina Jolie; something these actors and actresses share in common is their range in which they can play several kinds of characters — protagonists, antagonists, and everything in between — and usually are not relegated to being known for one particular role. Then there are Gemini actors who not only have a wide range of acting talent but also can get so lost within their role that sometimes you forget the actor behind the character, such as Doug Jones, Colin Farrell, and Johnny Depp. It’s these three in particular that I’m interested in examining to see what makes them such excellent shapeshifters; and in the case of Depp, what makes him a shapeshifter both on and off screen.
The Shape of Doug Jones
Of the three shapeshifting actors, Doug Jones is the only one that you might not recognize from their human mask alone. As a very tall, thin man with the flexibility that allows for contortionism, Jones became known for his ability to play non-human characters which often required him to be underneath many layers of makeup and prosthetics. Some of his most famous roles include Abe Sapien in the Hellboy film series, Fauno/Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth, The Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, and Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water.
In this excellent video on his life and career, Jones explains that he never intended to do “monster work” when he first began performance art as a mime in college. This level of full-body acting opened Jones up to roles that were “costume heavy” because he could play more off-the-wall, oddball characters. His first big break actually came in form of a cultural reset for McDonald’s when they began their Mac Tonight advertising campaign starring Doug Jones as Mac, a smooth-singing, sunglass-wearing crescent moon. This role gave him the reputation as the guy who can move well under layers and layers of makeup and prosthetics while keeping his cool, so when he met Guillermo del Toro during the filming of the movie Mimic (1997), which is such a Gemini-coded film anyway, del Toro immediately became a fan of Jones’ line of work and, thus beginning their long-term working relationship.
Doug Jones is probably the only man to make not just one fish man somehow good looking and sympathetic, but two fish men, both created by Guillermo del Toro and his makeup team. It’s quite incredible how, through del Toro, Doug Jones became part of this renaissance of sympathetic monsters which had not been seen en masse since the silent film years. And a great thing about Doug Jones’ work ethic and experience is how his line of work began to be taken more seriously so that a CGI-dominated field could merge with the practical effects rather than replacing amazing performances like his and Javier Botet.
Early in his career as a mime, Jones realized that communication is from head to toe, making acting more than filling a role; rather, becoming the character is required since most roles are completely alien from the human experience, so if you are to convince a human audience that your character is real in the world of the film, you have to believe and embody that as the actor playing the unfamiliar. Earlier I mentioned how Gemini rules the arms, hands, and lungs, and I find that Jones is the perfect example of someone who understands the connection between their physicality and communication even in the cosmic sense.
Quick side tangent: While not all Geminis are great contortionists like Jones, they often make use of their arms and hands in conversation (Gemini Mercury placements especially love to talk with their hands) or stand out because of their abnormal limb control (former pitcher to the San Francisco Giants Tim Lincecum is a fine example of a Gemini with a “freakish” pitching style). It’s honestly so perfect that the part of our body that splits into two is ruled by Gemini; additionally, while our arms and hands tend to appear identical, there are always subtle enough differences to distinguish both sides from one another, like twins, and some paradigms even define bilateral anatomy as masculine/feminine, with the left side of the human body representing the “Yin” or the feminine and the right side representing the “Yang” or masculine.
With the next two actors, their ability to shapeshift into their characters usually doesn’t require working under such heavy layers of prosthetics, but the roles they take often require them to become someone diametrically opposite to themselves or to shapeshift between appearances as part of the film’s plot. In fact, there are two movies both actors appear in where they “shapeshift” as the same character.
Transfiguration Twins - Colin Farrell & Johnny Depp
Following Heath Ledger’s sudden passing during the filming of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), three actors joined the project in order to complete the CGI scenes that featured Ledger’s character Tony: Jude Law, Johnny Depp, and Colin Farrell. Donating all of their earnings to Ledger’s ex-wife Michelle Williams to help raise their daughter, these three actors essentially saved this project, along with the writers who creatively came up with a reason for Tony’s shapeshifting abilities. If you’ve never seen the film, some minor spoilers ahead: Doctor Parnassus is an ancient mystic who lives within an Imaginarium until he makes a deal with the devil to have purpose: to raise a daughter. He gives her a normal life in modern-day Britain, but part of the deal is that his daughter’s soul belongs to the Devil if the Devil is able to trap more people in Doctor Parnassus’ Imaginarium than DP is able to save them through good moralistic choices. All this becomes complicated by the entrance of a deceptive criminal, Tony, who has deals of his own he is trying to escape. Every time Tony enters the Imaginarium, his appearance changes because he is already a deceiver, hiding his true nature behind a disarming mask; now, he can become anything, so the three actors fulfill this by being complete masks for Tony in this dream world. Did I mention that the way into the Imaginarium is through a giant mirror?
The shapeshifting antics continue seven years later in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) where Colin Farrell plays a character named Graves who also isn’t exactly as he seems. At first, we gather that he is a high-ranking Auror (wizard cop) who tries to recruit a young wizard, Credence, to obtain an Obscurus, a parasite that attaches itself to magically gifted children who suppress their magical powers, which is what Graves believes has been causing mysterious destruction within 1920’s NYC.
*Spoilers for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ahead*
After a series of discoveries, such as the Obscurus being within Credence all along, we also discover that Graves had targeted Credence in particular because he wanted to expose the magical community to the non-magical world. It is revealed that Graves is not, in fact, a high-ranking Auror set on finding and capturing the Dark Wizard Grindelwald, but instead he is Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp, who used an advanced Transfiguration spell to disguise himself, which is the wizarding world equivalent to shapeshifting.
There are plenty of films both before and after these two that Farrell and Depp transform themselves into completely different people, such as Colin Farrell’s insane transformation into The Penguin in The Batman (2022) film and The Penguin (2024) mini-series.
As for Johnny Depp, Fantastic Beasts was hardly the first role that required him to go under a disguise, and it was hardly the first role that required him to play someone drastically different than himself. However, it was the role that garnered him controversy — not because of the role itself, but because he was set to continue playing Grindelwald at the same time as accusations of alcohol/drug abuse and domestic violence began to surface, thus beginning a several-year court battle over libel that later developed into the infamous defamation case Depp v. Heard. Mind you, all of this happened after decades of nothing but praise and admiration from audiences; he was part of the 90s “bad boy” image that followed other actors such as River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves, and later became beloved for recurring roles such as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise or creative roles with director Tim Burton such as the titular character in Edward Scissorhands (1990) or Mad Hatter in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland live-action films. Easily, I would have included him in the list of well-liked actors had it not been for the series of cancellations around the time of these trials.
Before getting into the libel and defamation cases, I’d like to share something he said about Trump back in 2017 that started to ruffle some feathers. Although he would later apologize for the severity of the comment, it’s undeniable that he is referencing Abraham Lincoln’s assassination when he said, “When was the last time an actor assassinated a president? I want to clarify: I'm not an actor. I lie for a living. However, it's been a while and maybe it's time. I'm not insinuating anything.” I find the part where he said “I’m not an actor. I lie for a living” particularly interesting because of the honesty of it, as ironic as that sounds. He’s not wrong, and more, we should keep in mind moving forward that this notion can and does appear in both of his court cases. The narrative, media coverage, and public opinion of the cases, especially the defamation case against Amber Heard, skewed toward favoring Depp at the time, but the larger conversation has since evolved, shifting toward examining the public’s blatant sexism toward Heard and lack of nuance and caution in the rhetoric surrounding domestic violence.
To begin, when Depp and Heard finalized their divorce in January 2017, Depp released a joint statement saying their relationship was "intensely passionate and periodically volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm." Looking at their charts, we can see what he’s referring to before ever getting into their sides of the relationship. Depp’s moon (emotions/femininity/protectiveness/nostalgia) is at 13° Capricorn while Heard’s Mars (action/passion/aggression/sex) is at 11° Capricorn, which explains the intense passion and extreme emotions, while their Venuses (love/desire/compassion/fortune) sit next to each other at 26° Taurus (Depp) and 25° Taurus (Heard), bringing in the love bond he speaks of. We will get into more of their synastry aspects in a bit.
Depp v News Group Newspapers Ltd. came about when their UK tabloid The Sun published an article in April 2018 describing Depp as a “wife beater,” so he sued them for libel. Depp and Heard testified in the July 2020 trial, which examined 14 incidents of alleged abuse, 12 of which Depp was found guilty of committing. Judge Andrew Nicol determined that the publisher was in fair reason to characterize Depp as they did. Later requests to appeal the verdict were later denied.
In an unrelated instance, Heard had written an op-ed published by The Washington Post in December 2018 about experiencing sexual abuse and domestic violence, but she did not accuse anyone by name. Her op-ed addressed how often women are silenced and bullied for speaking out against their abuser, all the while abusers and their reputations are protected, which would become a horrific manifestation for Heard. Two months later, Depp sued his ex-wife for defamation over the op-ed. His lawyers made three statements that Heard and her legal team would later countersue: 1) Amber Heard and her friends used the media to spurn Depp over false allegations of sexual violence, 2) Heard and her friends faked an altercation by spilling wine and roughing up the place and calling 911 after a failed 911 call ended in no findings, and 3) Heard’s claims of domestic abuse are false. Along with denying any allegation of abuse and insisting that Heard’s allegations were fabrications, Depp and his legal team also claimed that it was Heard who was the abuser in the relationship, stating multiple instances where Heard allegedly physically abused Depp.
The two actors’ legal teams went back and forth for some time, with Heard’s team counterarguing that Depp’s addiction to drugs and alcohol fueled multiple occasions of physical and sexual assaults against Heard. Additionally, they stated that because the op-ed did not name Depp explicitly and had come out two years after it was public knowledge that Depp had been accused of domestic violence, the op-ed was not the reason for Depp’s ruined reputation but rather Depp himself and his continued drug abuse were to blame.
During the case’s closing arguments, Depp’s legal team damned Heard’s character for not only being cruel to her ex-husband but also to “true survivors of domestic abuse,” as well as mocking her for bringing in paid experts to testify rather than close friends while Depp brought in witnesses and personal relations to testify his good character. While I believe Depp’s lawyers were simply better and probably cost more than Heard’s team, I find that this particular angle was rather outrageous. It may be their job to paint a certain picture for the jury to buy their story, but in order to win them over, they had to completely deny the libel case Heard had won prior, insinuate that a victim can only be a victim and not an abuser and vice versa, and argue that bringing in experts is less convincing than close friends and employees of Depp. Heard did bring family, friends, and acquaintances to testify, as well as some of Depp’s former friends, employees, and colleagues, and the experts she called forth usually were surgeons, forensic analysts, and psychiatrists, including Depp’s former psychiatrist. It seems like when Heard wasn’t able to use physical evidence as proof, she brought in those who could better explain domestic abuse on top of doing the same thing that Depp did by bringing in those who could vouch for her, but because she had far less personal witnesses, there wasn’t enough sway in the jury’s favor. Of course, her lack of popularity as an actress and celebrity gave her even less sway to those who live-streamed the month-long trial.
The verdict concluded that all three statements presented by Depp’s lawyer were false — Heard had defamed Depp with actual malice in her 2018 op-ed. After Heard’s counterclaim, the jury then found that only the second statement was defamatory. While both of them made appeals for a new trial, the case was finally settled in December 2022, dropping their appeals.
So, I’m not particularly interested in becoming a professional keyboard investigator and determining who the real abuser is in this case. If I were to do so, I’d say it’s everyone who has followed the case and believes that the circumstances are black and white and the abuser is clear. I’d say it’s any one of these so-called body language experts and human lie detectors who are just as swayed by story and personal opinion as they are by believability. It’s a tired case by all means, and I’m not interested in calling either of them the definitive bad guy or really even both of them; even though part of what Depp said earlier about acting and lying applies to both, it’s just not the point. He had a substance problem and was not doing good by himself let alone anyone else, so do you think that would bring out the best in him or his partner? Fuck no.
While it may be embellished that he had used “every kind of drug there were” by age 14, it is known that he has struggled with alcohol for most of his life, going on and off of it on several occasions. Like his fellow shapeshifting Gemini, Colin Farrell also grew up with problems, stating he had “been drunk or high since [he] was 14,” but unlike Depp, Farrell has kept up with sobriety, even checking into a rehab center preemptively in 2018. At the end of the day, he took the poison that he got along well with because addiction happens. Whether or not he became abusive while inebriated is out of the question; whether he is to blame for his ruined reputation is even clearer, especially when you look a little closer at their natal charts and synastry.
First, let’s look at the harsher aspects involving Depp’s Gemini Sun and Heard’s placements:
His 18° Gemini Sun (ego, consciousness, core self) opposite her 15° Sagittarius Juno (marriage, fidelity, trust). With this close opposition, there has always been tension between Depp’s sense of selfhood and well-crafted ego and Heard’s desire for a committed marriage. The two fell in love rather quickly during the filming and press tour of the film The Rum Diary (2011) but couldn’t engage until Depp split from his long-term partner, Vanessa Paradis, with whom he had two children with. During their engagement party in March 2014, Amber seemed to appear uncomfortable with the publicity that came with being with the famous actor and musician, and later that year some tabloids began to report that there were already troubles brewing within the relationship before tying the knot on February 3, 2015. Public appearances and comments were usually positive, with Depp praising Heard’s intelligence, well-roundedness, and patience, while Heard opened up about being in a “strange and hard” marriage that still felt rewarding, especially concerning her relationship with his children.
And isn’t that the nature of an opposition like this? While not the indicator that guarantees a failing marriage, it is tough to be so famous and so profoundly well-loved and then to marry someone so much younger and only just getting started in the industry. She got the prize that Paradis could never quite get (although his former partner might not have wanted to marry Depp), but it didn’t seem to be the right case for the pair as she filed for divorce after 15 months of marriage, with Heard filing a restraining order just a few days after. Regardless of if Depp is the “marrying type” or not, the two couldn’t seem to find common ground beyond their shared interests and love for one another. His 18° Gemini Sun opposite. her 22° Sagittarius Uranus (abruptions, accidents, collective consciousness). Uranus is a generational planet, so this aspect also involves those of Heard’s same age and life events. More than most other generations, it seemed that women around ages 18-40 were the only advocates for Heard during the trials. While I admit to carrying suspicions of her character, I also found that many news outlets and men used the trials as an excuse to be blatantly sexist and shame victims as is often the case with celebrity trials involving allegations of physical and sexual violence toward women. And when the narrative turned toward physical violence against men, men’s right’s activists were more focused on demonizing Heard and women as a whole, framing them as sirens, seductresses, black widows, and femme fatales rather than actually speaking on the common erasure of male victims of violence. It was a whole mess collectively, which very well could have been spurned by an act of aggression by Ms. Heard — if not physical, certainly their verbal arguments would have been heated, as was evident by the video footage shown in court; although, I find Uranus represents our reaction to sudden events opposed to causing violent incidents. Either way, the clashing of his ego and her difference in age and mentality was another damaging spot to their relationship.
His 18° Gemini Sun square his 14° Pisces Chiron asteroid conjunct her 13° Pisces Jupiter and 14° Pisces Vesta asteroid. This one is a lot so I’ll break it down. Looking solely at Depp’s chart, he already has a hard time with healing his deepest wounds because his ego conflicts with his wounded healer, Chiron, which sits in his 8th house of merging and shadow work. Essentially, everyone has areas they need to heal in life that will always be difficult to heal because of past trauma or bad habits; Chiron is called the wounded healer because he will always try to heal in this area but can never fully heal it in themselves, even if they are excellent at healing it in others. So, Depp’s celebrity ego has had a tendency to betray his need to slow down and turn inward, focusing on how he can be a better partner and deeper person altogether, instead turning to his work, music, and drinking when his wounds would inevitably spring back up. Keep in mind that Depp’s 15° Virgo Juno is almost exactly opposite his Pisces Chiron, so he needed to be more healed before ever thinking about remarrying.
So when Heard entered his life, she might have very well seemed like the solution to his problems with Jupiter and Vesta landing right on top his Chiron. Think of it like this: you have been struggling for a long time, yearning for someone to come in and make it all okay and maybe even share some of the same pain that you’ve had or go about fixing problems in the same way. Then, all of a sudden, that very person enters your life and knows exactly what you’re going through, empathizes with you greatly, wants to help you, and will love you through anything. That is the power of a Jupiter/Vesta conjunct. In the natal person, Heard is like a beacon of light who expands and brings fortune (Jupiter) to Depp’s wounded self while also taking it upon herself to save him from himself through her love for him, like a sacred flame (Vesta). Several times throughout their relationship, Depp mentioned how “lucky” he felt having her in his life, and there were instances where it seemed like they were a great philanthropic fit, such as when they handed out hearing aids in Rio de Janeiro for the Starkey Hearing Foundation. But Heard’s Jupiter and Vesta aren’t going to just bring opportunities for healing; they directly trigger many of Depp’s wounds in order for more healing to occur, and with an opposition to his Juno, it makes whatever demons Depp face part of the marriage, turning the happy-go-lucky newlyweds into a struggle for basic survival. Going back to his squared Gemini Sun, his ego would forever be tied to a publicly disastrous divorce and the two court cases involving his ex-wife, changing the public’s perspective of him forever.Bonus placement (non-Gemini): Depp’s 13° Aries Jupiter (expansion, fortune, generosity) 17° Aries Midheaven (fame, public opinion, legacy), & 17° Aries Nemesis asteroid (antagonism, biggest foe) conjunct Heard’s 11° Aries Nemesis. In other words, Depp is the biggest enemy concerning his fall from grace — Heard couldn’t help but contribute her part with a 6° orb conjunction. He may have tried to pin all the blame onto her, making her to be the bad guy, but the proof is in the stars: his violent rise to extreme stardom was met with a violent fall, most of which was his doing.
Obviously, there is a lot to their synastry that points to why their relationship ended and snowballed the way it did, but I focused on these points because they had the most to do with the persona Johnny Depp had crafted as a well-loved, talented actor in Hollywood. A man known for method acting had, unfortunately, committed to the bit a little too hard with Heard. I think that it was only a matter of time that we see the mask slip so that the people could see how great men are only great because we make them to be.
Good men are real, and he very well could have been and still has the chance to be a good man if he owned up to his ridiculous behavior during the trials and horrible dependency to people’s approval. It isn’t enough to recognize that addiction to illicit drugs and alcohol can make a monster out of a decent person; what about owning up to the fact that neither of them actually benefited from the trials and that is was essentially a waste of everyone’s time and money? Or that he always had the upperhand financially and parasocially and used that to diminish Heard’s chances at future success?
To me, Depp played a role that no one would ever forget, telling a story of his shadow that transformed into a beautiful woman who weakened him and stole everything from him: his money, fame, and attraction. All previous failings could be redeemed by getting everyone to turn on the person he once loved dearly by convincing them she was an evil witch and only he and his team of lawyers could break the spell. But, in reality, how accurate is such a tale? She may have been young and new to acting, but he admitted to falling for her first and more or less “looking for her” while still in a relationship with Paradis. He constantly claimed during the second trial that she was a gold digger, yet she argued that she wanted a pre-nup while Johnny vehemently declined such a thing and claimed that he took pre-nups as evidence of her wanting to leave him. And obviously Heard hadn’t stolen any of his fame or talent because she never got any roles through her marriage to Depp, and she essentially bounced from Hollywood after being crucified by the public during the trials, so she’s hardly the multiple personality egomaniac she was painted out to be. When you compare the way they would talk about each other, Heard mostly stuck to talking about how frightening and harmful he could be when inebriated, yet she still attempted to send him a note a year after their divorce saying she loved him and was sorry about how their relationship ended, while Depp...well...,
“She won’t donate ONE PENNY!!!! No way she’ll give a dime to anyone!!! Thank fuck she’s gone!!! Makes me sick to think of how hard I tried to make it work. Now... Honestly, I wouldn’t touch that fucking whore with a hazmat suit on!!! What scum. I fucking hate her!!!”
That was from a text he sent to his nurse back in August 2016 shortly after she filed for divorce. Dude even went so far to change the knuckle tattoo he dedicated to her from “Slim,” her nickname, to “Scum” and later to “Scam.” You know, winner behavior.
I’d like to share something Amber Heard said about Johnny Depp during the press tour of The Rum Diary back in November 2011:
"Johnny Depp is who he is because he is this enigmatic presence that is hard to define, he's hard to label and hard to pin down. He's a wonderful person and [a] consummate professional, but a lovely person, and you can't help but be sucked into the Johnny Deppness on set."
She is describing the nature of a master shapeshifter: someone you can’t quite pin down and say, “They are this type because they do a, b, and c.” Geminis fit so well under the archetype because they are the only sign of the zodiac who can defy labels and stereotypes if and when the moment calls for it. When you are so used to being someone else in order to fulfill a role and are so used to receiving praise for being the only person who can fulfill that role, then the pressure naturally grows. Can you be a true self when you are so defined by who you’ve played and what those characters mean to other people? Do parts of you come through these characters or can you perfectly separate the artist from the art? When the cameras are off and the people stop cheering, who are you really at the end of the day? And if you wear so many different masks depending on who you are with, do you even have a self just meant for you, separate from everyone else?
I ask rhetorically because I really don’t know. These are all questions we’ve had more or less regarding the actors and celebrities we admire. We trust that if you are a talented actor who spends their free time dressing as their most popular character to visit sick kids in hospitals, then you must be a good guy. That if you didn’t abuse your previous partner, that you won’t abuse the next. That if you did nothing wrong, then someone’s lies are not going to ruin a secure, well-established career and legacy. Yet he casually talks about his ex like a high school boy who just went through his first major breakup. Yet he most certainly had a toxic, abusive relationship with Heard that he contributed to. Yet he held essentially a public shaming ceremony to air out their dirty laundry that still couldn’t quite sway the public into believing he was blameless. Personally, I don’t view legacy as more important than my personal life, but even if the matter was more about owning back his personal life, did he and his legal team really need to frame Heard as an irredeemable woman who’s out to get him for everything he’s worth? The power dynamic between them is blatant through age and money alone, among other contributing factors, and it’s not her that held the most power at any point of their relationship or the trials.
Shapeshifters ultimately belong in myth and half-truths. Depp exists within the myth of cancellation — that a man held accountable for his wrongdoings and insults are ruined beyond repair by a jealous, vengeful witch or that allegations of abuse have an equal chance of being false as they do being true. His image, while not what it was pre-trial, is largely legitimized by his history of professionalism within his work and by those within his circle who will support him no matter what, as evidence by the amount of personal testimonies on his character from friends and former partners. He dually exists within the half-truths of black and white morality where one believes and insists that one can either be an abuser or a victim, never both. Or that if abuse is reciprocated, there is equal blame and punishment as consequence.
In denying conclusive evidence of domestic abuse and reframing the abuser, he failed to demonstrate sincerity, humility, and acceptance. The stories we tell are not the objective truth, but if we reach for the truth, as he said he was, then that requires actually pursuing the full truth to the best of one’s ability. Even if subjective truth is all that counts in our limited perspectives, shapeshifters have the ability to tell a story that changes people, creating new selves, new shapes, new truths that contribute to the larger tapestry of life where shapeshifting Geminis are complexly woven threads. There is much more to a shapeshifter than trickery; like in the indigenous stories, there is a lesson to be learned.
Doug Jones opened the door for monster actors to be taken seriously as professionals and receive more leading roles filled with heart, changing the narrative on what makes a monster. Colin Farrell spoke on his own battles with alcohol, opening up on how anyone can struggle with and overcome addiction. Johnny Depp easily could have done the same; with all that he’s offered over the years as a staple in the industry you’d think that he’d direct a film on male domestic abuse survivors, or something to that effect. Maybe brag about how amazing his daughter Lily-Rose Depp has been in her acting projects lately. I don’t know — something nice? Because he shapeshifts so often, it’s easy to shift alignments, so sometimes you’re just not fun anymore. Sometimes the best you can do is keep shifting until you find the mask everyone loves again. I’m sure it will work out for him and he’ll get his flowers some day, but I can’t help but feel the same can’t be said for Amber. Maybe that was the goal all along, but regardless, she deserves peace.
With that, I’m over talking about it. Am I late to the story and gregarious like I was with the Logan Paul section of my Aries piece? Yeah, probably. Okay, the next one is fun and twin-themed so let’s go.
The Mirror Archetype
Finally, we have come to my favorite archetype of Gemini: The Mirror. When peering through the looking glass, we must encounter our reflection and all that it offers, including the inconvenient truths about ourselves and our collective humanity. With such brutal honesty, we can begin to understand why Gemini is one of the most hated signs of the Zodiac...
I’m going to hold your hand when I say this: if you do not like the sign of Gemini as a whole, you more than likely have something you personally dislike about yourself that you do not like witnessing in other people. It is one thing to dislike a particular Gemini. All sane people dislike at least one Gemini I’ve mentioned here. But to paint Gemini as the villain of the Zodiac is just silly and frankly incorrect. Mirror, mirror on the wall, I guess I’m the bad guy sometimes too.
Gemini is the first sign thus far to harbor some real complexity, so to look at them (or anything) with a strict black or white perspective places limits on the incredible diversity Geminis have to offer. As I discussed in the previous section on “The Shapeshifter Archetype,” as a mutable sign, Gemini is able to observe and adapt with a level of fluidity and grace that has yet to be seen within the Zodiac so far.
After all, the mutable pair of twins can check in with themselves and change their mind upon receiving new information more easily than Aries and Taurus (and most other zodiac signs for that matter). This isn’t to say that there aren’t stubborn or closed-minded Geminis out there, but every person has a series of placements that can “override” their Sun sign’s (ego) general attitude or they are so underdeveloped/toxic that they only display the worst traits of their dominant sign. If this is the case, then a person chooses to lean into the worst version of themselves, backed by the negative sides of their placements, which sometimes appear as the stark opposite of their positive traits. For Gemini, because they are mirrors, their negative side mirroring their positive side is especially the case.
I believe this is where the confusion behind Gemini’s expression of self often stems from. People feel like they are dealing with two people, a cosmic representation of bipolar disorder packaged in a single vessel, so they paint them as the obvious villain of the Zodiac, but this is hardly the case in truth. When you meet an unhealed Gemini, their charm and cleverness is often packaged as manipulative like a seedy business man looking to make a quick buck off some sucker. Likewise, their ability to turn a phrase can come off as a shady tactic in order to twist the narrative to their liking.
Yet, somehow, their ability to “say it like it is” according to the unwise enraptures those in search for the truth, blinded by the fact that “the truth” is only what the mischievous Gemini wants them to believe. Like a teacher, the goal of Gemini is to lead others toward finding the truth without giving away the entirety of that truth, as in little is touched on about the nature of subjective truth and its governance over objective truth, which is supposed to be the predominant content taught in education. Once the basics are met, this particular kind of Gemini prefer to stay the smartest in the room, stopping the lesson short of the profound and existential.
With kind-hearted, big-feeling Geminis, they gooooo all day long when they’re with the right person — aka someone who won’t drain them and their social meter. They can go at length and in depth on a matter of things that shares a sense of mutual learning as opposed to the top-down approach. If the energy meshes well, Geminis will gas you up and mirror back your humor, interests, and even stims and quirks effortlessly. The key component to any good relationship with a Gemini is to come into it with a full sense of self and self-love; from there, you will find a version of yourself in them that is impossible not to love.
Nevertheless, Geminis are their own people, and their lives are not meant to be in service as someone’s looking glass to fall in love with (narcissistic Geminis are bad enough but a narcissist attached to a Gemini is even worst). In turn, as their own people, not all of their best and worst traits are a reflection of those around them. Sometimes a Gemini is not the best version of themselves that day and act out of character — none of which is at the fault of anyone but their own. Simultaneously, when a Gemini acts out, there is also a large chance that projection becomes the defense mechanism of choice.
I’ve been here many times before with Geminis: you catch them in a lie, so how dare you act like you’ve been so perfectly honest. You tell them you wish they had told you sooner, so they pretend like you haven’t been reaching out although you have. You best them at something, so they underplay your success or ignore it completely. They can get a good read on a person’s character quickly too, so arguments go tit-for-tat on who deserves blame. Overall, I advise not to play victim or make a villain out of them because they can double the effect — that much was proven during Depp vs. Heard.
I’d say projection might be the top collective bad habit among mirroring Geminis, so it’s something they must tackle throughout their lifetime. I indicated in my previous piece on Taurus that the stars and every celestial body act as projectors on all twelve of the zodiac signs, so mirrors can project the light of several sources: the natal chart, the current transits, and sometimes other people’s natal charts. Things can intensify quickly so forge positive relationships with Gemini mirrors when you can for the sake of everyone.
There is a simultaneously tamed and intensified version of mirrors in biological twins, especially identical twins. They are a tamed mirror because they don’t tend to project or mirror other people’s energy besides their twin. On the other hand, they are a copy of another person who typically have more similarities than differences and an innate knowing of the other’s feelings and next moves. When you share almost identical natal charts, a lot can overlap, creating these similarities and shared selves; still, there will always be certain things that differ between twins, sometimes greatly so, that shared natal placements don’t exactly cover beyond the dual (positive/negative) expressions of any given sign. Unlike Western astrology, there are unique systems in Indian/Hindu/Vedic astrology that better explain the differences between a pair of twins.
The Twin Dilemma
We know by now that angles are determined by the time of birth in Western Astrology, meaning you could be quite different from someone born an hour after you simply the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon is constantly changing. The same applies to angles in Vedic astrology, but the time gap becomes even narrower in where even a difference of a few minutes can result in several changes in planetary positions due to systems such as nakshatras and dashas.
A nakshatras, or lunar mansions, are 27 (sometimes also 28) sectors (group of stars) along the ecliptic that are ruled by one of the nine planetary bodies: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu (North Node), and Ketu (South Node). Each nakshatra is separated by 13° or twenty minutes, so it is common for one twin to be born in one nakshatra and the next to be born in another.
The same applies to dasha periods, which is based on the Nakshatra at the time of birth. According to “28 Nakshatras - The Real Secrets of Vedic Astrology,” these planetary periods “provide an easy and comprehensive system for judging the effects of planets throughout out our lives. The planetary periods are the most accurate system of how the planets distribute their effects through time and different stages of our lives.” Essentially, under Vedic astrology every chart is particularly unique based off these systems, providing an astrological explanation as to why pair of twins can differ in personality, interests, or talents.
On the other hand, if you have a pair of twins so identical that it is scary, such as the case of the Olsen twins, then there may only be one or two differences in their sidereal charts. Still, this does indicate a little more than Western astrology can. For instance, the Olsen twins were born two minutes apart on June 13, 1986, putting their sidereal Big 3 at Taurus Sun, Leo Moon, and Cancer Ascendant with their Moon Nakshatra in Magha. The one difference I can find in their chart (keep in mind I have little experience with reading sidereal charts) is a pada period of their ascendant’s nakshatra. A pada period is a quarter of each nakshatra, so the fact that not only did these two manage to have the same angles, placements, and nakshatras but they also almost had the same padas within those nakshatras.
Luckily because these two are so similar, there really isn’t a dilemma to solve, so going back to Western Tropical Astrology, we can see some fun things in their natal charts that make them the ultimate mirrored twins. Despite coming second in the typical order of their names, Ashley Olsen was born first at 9:43am and Mary-Kate Olsen was born at 9:45am near late Gemini season. Every placement, including the angles, is at the same degree, while their Suns — and I kid you not — are both at 22’22° Gemini.
Alright, stop it, you two.
I think these two had a fun time planning their debut. Twins are ultimately their own people no matter how identical they appear, so each twin is their own soul, but they truly wanted nothing but to work in tandem from the beginning. They began their lives on-screen starring in Full House from 1987-1995 with the pilot being filmed when they were only 9 months old. I grew up watching their VHS video series like The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley or You’re Invited, as well as their many movies traveling across the world. There was sometimes an effort to differentiate the two when they aren’t playing a dramatized version of themselves, but most of the time they are matching or complementary in everything from appearance, clothing, and expression. After a lifetime in TV and film, the Olsen twins stepped away from acting to pursue fashion design, launching their luxury fashion label, The Row, in 2006.
Besides the differences in their marriages and Mary-Kate’s equestrian career, these two have lived their lives at the hip with an invisible mirror between them at all times. The cosmos felt it was only right to have two talented individuals inseparable from one another who could fulfill double the trouble within their lifetimes.
The Dilemma of Twins
The unexpected hit film of the year, Sinners (2025), which stars Michael B. Jordan as the pair of twins, Smoke and Stack (The Smokestack Twins), comes from Gemini Sun director Ryan Coogler. According to Coogler, twins are common within his family, so that familiarity is there, plus the inspiration for the film’s twins comes from the Yoruba religion in Nigeria. Ibeji represents a pair of divine twins worshiped by the Yoruba people as a symbol of luck, abundance, duality, and mischief. If one of the twins were to die before the other, then bad luck would be brought onto the family and society the twins grew up in. More on this later.
Ibeji is sometimes called Ibeyi, which is the name of a French musical duo made up of twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz. The twins sing in English, French, Spanish and — of course — Yoruba, from which they came up with their band name. I came across their music many years ago after the release of 2014 single “River,” so I just wanted to give them a shoutout here because of the connection.
*Major spoilers ahead for Sinners*
Back to Sinners, Coogler wanted to include twins because of the connection to Nigerian culture, so fortune/misfortune is a primary theme within the film. Set in the 1930’s Jim Crow era South, the plot consists of Smoke and Stack returning to their hometown in southern Mississippi after working with the mob up in Chicago for seven years. While they grew tougher and richer in that time, their emotional wealth had been depleted living in the concrete jungle that separated them from their roots. We soon learn both twins had something they were running from by going up to Chicago: love. For Smoke, he left behind Annie after their baby passed away suddenly, and Stack left behind Mary because she would not have been happy in an interracial marriage where he couldn’t provide her the affluent lifestyle she grew up in. Returning home, they come face to face with both of their long lost loves and learn that not much has changed: Smoke still wears the mojo bag around his neck that Annie gave him to keep him safe, and Mary still wants Stack despite being married to another man.
**Edited note 6/27/25: Thank you Straw Hat Goofy on TikTok for pointing out a really cool twinning moment in Sinners I previously hadn’t noticed! During the surreal sequence (which is the best scene of the 2020’s cinema imho), each person at the juke has their own “twin,” aka a dancer/musician ancestor from the past/future. For example, the first spirit we see is a rockstar guitarist from the 70’s/80’s who doubles Sammie’s talent as a Blues guitarist, and from there every guest is shown with an accomponying spirit — even Cornbread. Not only does this establish the connectedness of music between people within a room, it also proves how interconnected everyone is through music’s generational healing power, mirroring how the best things in life never change no matter the century. And like any family portrait, we can see how we “mirror” our ancestors by carrying on their eyes, their smiles, and everything in between. Twins don’t have to be relegated to siblings only; your twin can be your great, great grandfather, your mother, or even your child, so never take for granted the fact that “you” can be found in anyone; and if “you” can be found in anyone, then anyone you’ve ever loved can be found in anyone too. Anyway, this movie is so cool, and I love all the takeaways regarding twin symbolism.**
The misfortune begins once Stack is killed at the juke joint the Smokestack Twins put together to celebrate their return. It is established within the film that music heals and connects people to their ancestors but also brings in those who want to siphon that positive energy for evil or selfish reasons; this is where Remmick and vampirism enters the plot, as the twins have a cousin, Sammie, who sings and plays Blues music so beautifully that it channels ancestors — past and future — as well as summons vampires. After Mary is the first to be turned, she immediately uses her newfound powers to kill and turn Stack so they can be together forever without any societal shame. Guest after guest get turned or killed until there is a frenzy of vampires and only Sammie and Smoke left.
My theory is that Smoke is protected by the mojo bag Annie gave him while Sammie is protected by the twins — that they are the Ibeji who bring him fortune to stay alive throughout the entirety of the movie. I have a couple reasons to think this: 1) Stack tries to turn Smoke but can’t because the mojo bag is in the way, preventing him. He doesn’t get rid of the mojo bag until the very end before killing the KKK clan because he wanted to die to be with Annie and their child; and 2) since the beginning, the twins protected Sammie, whether it was from the snake hiding in the back of the truck or Stack letting Sammie go unturned to respect his twin brother’s blessing. Even though Smoke died in the end, when Stack returns to Sammie when he’s old aged, he keeps his promise and lets him live out the rest of his life. Sammie remained safe, the same could not be said for the community.
Since Ibeji indicates misfortune when the twins are separated by death, I also believe that this is represented through Stack’s vampirism. He takes on a new kind of cultural vampirism where the freedom found within black community and music is lost to fulfill baser desires such as individual wealth and power. As I’ve discussed here, the empowering of black artists like Tupac and Biggie Smalls shattered entirely by their feud, giving the community more grief, and I think setting Sammie and Stack’s conversation at the beginning of the 90’s somewhat alludes to this disconnect, disempowerment, and misfortune that capitalistic individualism — symptoms of colonialism and assimilation — befalls onto the community.
Coogler is the perfect candidate to demonstrate this with his 2° Gemini Sun, 3° Gemini Mercury, 4° Sagittarius Moon, 14° Gemini Chiron, and 9th house Cancer Venus. Starting with his Gemini placements, like any good mirror Coogler reflects the culture in his art; Sinners, the Black Panther movies, the Creed movies, Judas and the Black Messiah — the man has a thing or two to say what it means to be black in America throughout its sordid history of racism and brutality. Having his Sun and Mercury conjunct at 1° apart means he speaks from a personal place and does not struggle to say what he means, which is golden as a celebrated young director.
Then, with a Gemini Chiron, he finds it a personal task to heal the hurt parts of him; as we saw with fellow 8th house Chiron Johnny Depp, some resort to dark matters like drugs and toxic relationships to fix what’s broken, but Coogler seems to direct all of his shadow healing into his films. Sinners is the first “horror/thriller” film of Coogler, but it isn’t exactly scary in the traditional sense, as all of his films tackle such serious topics that they all contain black horror to some degree, similar to Jordan Peele’s films. Since his Gemini Sun and Mercury join Chiron in the 8th house, I find that he is able to communicate the darkest aspects of being black in a historically anti-black world with true ease and mass appeal. He also has a huge emotional connection to his culture, as well as how his culture connects to others, with his Sun and Mercury opposing his 4° Sagittarius Moon. As the cultural sign of the zodiac, Sagittarius provided the openness and adventurous energy that allowed Coogler to explore other immigrated cultures within the 1930’s South, such as Chinese and Irish families, and how the interaction of these communities shaped the overall culture as well as each other’s respective cultures. Plus, as a 9th house Venus myself (Placidus), travelin’ (by Miles Canton) and exploring other cultures is simply the best.
Even with such exuberance for other cultures, Sagittarius/9th house placements must come face to face with the awful parts of culture as well, such as the two other Nigerian cultures, the Igbo and the Efik people, who view twins as a sign of misfortune at birth and either killed or abandoned twins to an “evil forest.” In some cases, this is still practiced in remote areas, but it is debated whether or not this is a myth. I have no way of knowing if Coogler was saying anything on this in Sinners, but it is something to consider. In the film, there is such a wide variety of cultures, which I didn’t even mention the Choctaw until now, in such a small area that you can understand how one nation can harbor so many subcultures that can greatly differ from one another, sometimes to a hugely antithetical degree. It is this very rubbing against multicultural norms and values that Coogler explores so well, making him quite the marvelous “twin” storyteller and Gemini mirror.
Closing Thoughts
“We are full of excess and incoherence. There are parts of reality that within us resist symbolization that resist being categorized and named. Maybe it’s time to stop searching for that authentic self and see what it means to live in the unsymbolizable, the indescribable.” — Alex Avila from “Hannah Montana's Guide to Life Under Capitalism”
I think part of the reason why Gemini is one of my favorite signs of the Zodiac (in fact, it is the three summer signs that I gravitate toward the most naturally) is because they are so versatile and open to changing their approach to the world. As the first mutable sign, they really present as a kid willing to listen and learn when they are at their purest and most curious. Some prefer labels while others prefer fluidity on most aspects to their identity, so forgive Geminis for changing their mind like kids do when they’re figuring it out. And if you catch a Gemini being unusually stubborn, it can either be an opportunity to check in on your own terrible stubborness or a sign that they need to stop being enabled over bad behavior unless there is a solid reason for refusing to budge over something. No matter the kind of Gemini, there are no trick mirrors here — they are the real thing, even when they are reflecting back mere fantasy. Rather than calling Geminis liars, tricksters, two-faced, or bipolar, let’s call them Mercurial, transformative, multitudinous, and multi-faceted because at least then we are closer to the complexity that all Gemini prominent folk possess.
Anyway, I know it is an odd love letter to Gemini posting this so much later than normal, but this is partially in dedication to my lifetime best friend and Gemini sun girly pop who is never on time, so here’s to being fabulously late. Also, since I’m still getting used to the longer days at my job, it’s taking longer to write these pieces to the extent I’ve given Aries and Taurus so some signs will come out a week or two into the season. I already know I will want Cancer’s and Leo’s pieces to be very particular, so expect a delay in those publishing as well. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this one and I’ll see you soon for Cancer!
